» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Jacquese Foran
Character PULL-POINT: Just as he was departing with a party to Niflheim.
Character AGE: 24
Character ABILITIES:
Unlike Acolytes and Priests, Monks are a combat-oriented class whose primary weapons are their fists. They are capable of hitting hard and hitting fast, often able to deliver 3 blows in one attack (Triple Attack). And as such, Jacquese is quite strong and fast. He's especially effective against Undead and Demon types. Although blessed with some holy magic, a monk excels most in basically hitting things. His skills, adapted to fit the setting, are as following:
SUPPORT
力 Heal • Not as strong as a Priest's heal, but still capable of rejuvenating and healing fresh wounds.
力 Increase Agility • Will raise the target's speed and reflexes for 4 minutes.
力 Blessing • Will raise the target's strength, accuracy and magical power for 4 minutes.
MISC
力 Call Spirits/Summon Spirit Sphere • Summons a Spirit Sphere necessary for certain Monk skills. Five Spirit Spheres can be summoned at once and each Spirit Sphere lasts for 10 minutes. A Spirit Sphere has a holy element and raises one's strength. Also makes a good night light!
力 Absorb Spirit/Spiritual Sphere Absorption • By absorbing one Spirit Sphere, a monk can restore a small amount of energy.
力 Ki Translation/Spiritual Bestowment • Transfers one of the Spirit Spheres to another person.
OFFENSE
力 Holy Light • Deals a single Holy element hit, effective against anything, but is pretty weak.
力 Ki Explosion • Focuses a monk's inner energies and releases it in an attack that deals damage and pushes enemies away. Not only pushes the intended target away, but also anyone standing nearby.
力 Chain Combo • If a monk manages to land 3 consecutive blows, he can follow it up with another combo of 4 powerful hits. It does very briefly slow the monk down after use.
力 Combo Finish • If a Chain Combo is successful, the combo can be finished with a move that uses one Spirit Sphere. The Monk focuses that energy and slams his fist into the ground, causing a small explosion of energy that's powerful enough to send someone flying.
力 Investigate/Occult Impaction • Consume one Spirit Sphere to deliver a massive psychic impact to an enemy.
力 Finger Offensive/Throw Spirit Sphere • Throws Spirit Spheres at a distant target.
力 Critical Explosion/Fury • Consumes 5 Spirit Spheres to raise strength for 3 minutes, making attacks more critical. It's basically a sort of 'Berserk' mode.
力 Asura Strike/Guillotine Fist • After going into Fury status and summoning another 5 Spirit Spheres, a monk can use Asura Strike. It's a very powerful move that inflicts a huge amount of damage, but also drains the monk of all his energy so it's more a last resort sort of attack.
Character HISTORY:
One fateful day in Prontera, a kind priest came across a young orphan boy on the streets when said orphan made a failed attempt to pickpocket the priest. When the priest, Father Remiel Foran, found out that the boy was mute and had no recollection of anything other than his parents abandoning him, he decided to take the boy in knowing that the orphanage might not be able to give the boy all the attention he needed. Not only out of the goodness of his heart, but also to keep the boy from falling into the wrong hands like say, the guild of thieves, where someone who couldn't speak could potentially be trained to become the perfect assassin. He gave the boy the name Jacquese and taught him how to read and write, among other things like sign language to help him communicate.
That's how Jacquese ended up in the Church of Prontera and eventually, at Father Remiel's urging and the fact he might have to leave the church if he didn't, he became an acolyte. From the moment Father Remiel took him in, Jacquese was a troubled and rather troublesome kid and joining the acolytes didn't change that right away. He would often get into trouble, skipping lessons and getting into fights with the other acolytes. Suffice to say, he was quite rebellious. At least until the Church eventually got enough and threatened to expel him which would mean leaving Father Remiel's care as well as Remiel lived in the church as a teacher and had no home of his own.
Terrified of losing Father Remiel, being alone again and ending up in an orphanage, Jacquese began taking his studies very seriously. It took quite some effort on his part, but he became diligent and a top student while Father Remiel taught him how to play the piano and the church organ as a way for Jacquese to vent his emotions. That, and now that he had started taking his studies seriously and found faith, helped him mellow out considerably though he was still a force to be reckoned with when angered. His memories from before Father Remiel found him never returned to him, but he found peace with that.
As a way to honour his adoptive father, he wanted to become a priest himself, but Father Remiel encouraged him to do what he thought fit him best and although the Church had frowned down upon it, admittedly Jacquese was good at fighting and he'd never lost any of the fights he'd gotten into. So when he'd completed his studies as an acolyte and it was time to choose his next path, he chose to become a monk and put his strength to good use.
After successfully completing the tests necessary, Jacquese was allowed into the Monk Abbey to start training. The road to becoming a monk was a hard one, requiring a lot of discipline and confidence and rigorous physical training, but Jacquese wasn't alone. He fell in with a small group of three free spirited monks that helped him through it all and they became close friends. Remaining so even after the training in the Abbey was done and they were sent out into the world of Rune-Midgard to grow stronger and help people. They often went out together as a party of four monks, traveling to distant places where strong monsters dwelled or setting out on quests to help people by, for example, gathering items for them.
One thing the other three monks noticed was that, once outside the Abbey where people didn't know about Jacquese's condition, people would quickly grow impatient and upset with Jacquese after approaching him and not receiving a reply right away, probably thinking he was ignoring them when he was writing out a reply. In an attempt to 'help', they came up with the brilliant idea to just make Jacquese look more intimidating so people would be less inclined to approach him. His reputation from when he was a rebellious acolyte was pretty well known, having earned him the title as the demon acolyte and it had even carried through after he became a monk as it was still applicable whenever he got angry. They decided to run with the demon part of 'Demon Monk' and got him a pair of succubus horns and although it did make him look more intimidating, it became more of an inside joke among them and Jacquese just rolled with it good-naturedly.
As often as they went out together, they also split up and joined other parties of travelers and adventurers who could use the help of a monk. However, no matter how far they went, they would always return to Prontera and meet again. Jacquese always making sure to visit Father Remiel after every journey too.
One day Jacquese caught wind of a party setting out to Niflheim, a town of the dead infamous for making adventurers disappear, and after relaying this news to his monk friends, it was promptly decided they were going to go as well since it might be their biggest challenge yet. There were strong monsters there and their holy magic would be effective in aiding the group. It would be the perfect test of strength and perhaps help them in becoming strong enough to become champions, one step up after a monk. So they prepared to set out for a long, difficult journey to the dreadful town of Niflheim.
Character PERSONALITY:
At first glance Jacquese can come across as intimidating and it's true, what he lacks in voice he makes up for with presence, but anyone who spends five minutes with him will quickly come to realize that there isn't really much to be intimidated by. Despite how troubled he was as a child, he's grown up to be a very amiable fellow. Something Father Remiel often emphasized was 'be the change you want to see in the world' and Jacquese has taken that to heart. He treats everyone equally and with respect and he's not quick to judge someone, which makes him easy to get along with. He generally has a calm, pleasant disposition. Not being able to speak isn't something that bothers him, of course it's still occasionally frustrating, but it's a fact of life that he's accepted long ago. He can still communicate through other means and he's grateful enough for that, plus it's always better to look at the bright side of things and there are some; being mute has made him patient and a better listener.
However, regardless of how zen he is, he's no push over. If he believes something to be wrong, he won't stand by it and he'll let it be known. He's tolerant and certainly not one to force his own beliefs and opinions down someone's throat, but tolerance has its limits. He's only human after all. He does strive to always do the right thing, but it's not always easy to tell what that is and it's something he can get hung up about. Like, was it really alright to have helped an assassin knowing what they do for a living? He can't ignore someone who needs help, but killing people isn't something he endorses either. He does his best not to let it bother him too much, but he judges himself a lot more harshly than he judges others and occasionally he needs a nudge from someone else to make him stop dwelling on it.
His monk friends have been excellent for that and hanging out with them has made him more of a free spirit himself. The road of the monk can be arduous and it's easy to get lost in all the disciplines and become hardened. But Jacquese's band of merry monks have taught him to enjoy life to its fullest and that it's okay to do things for yourself too.
Obviously he's come a long way from when he was a child suffering from abandoned child syndrome, acting out out of fear and anger. With the steady support of Father Remiel he's worked through most of that, though some things still linger like a small fear of being alone and not good enough and his explosive anger. Although he's pretty darn hard to anger now, unless you know what buttons to push, once he is angry it's best to vacate the area he's in as soon as possible if you're the one who pissed him off. Over the years he's learned how to not let something piss him off so easily, but never how to control his anger once he actually is angry. So when he is angry, it's like a switch has been flipped and he's a different, much more volatile person. The title 'Demon Monk' stuck with him for good reason.
The easiest way to anger him is to hurt the people he cares about or speak ill of them or to speak ill of the Church or the Abbey. He has a deep gratitude for both organizations and for Father Remiel who he aspires to be like and who he wants to make proud. Insulting them is a good way to get a fist to the face.
Jacquese enjoys fighting, something which he felt was wrong and thus felt guilty about when he was younger, but being among the monks and like-minded folks changed that really fast and now he no longer feels bad about enjoying it. He prefers fighting monsters over people, though he's not one to turn down a good friendly spar, and the more challenging, the better. Sometimes he can get a little too into a fight and it has the same effect as when he's angry, then oops, there goes the Demon Monk.
Needless to say he's not afraid of confrontation, but more than anything he fights to protect and make people happy. He helps people, feeling it to be his duty as a monk, but also simply because he genuinely enjoys it. Especially kids he has something of a soft spot for, not wanting them to have the kind of childhood he had on the streets. If you ever need help, Jacquese is a good, reliable guy to turn to.

First PERSON:
[ The feed turns on to a close up of brown eyes before the owner of said eyes pulls back, revealing a scarred face and... horns? The man's face shows some mild confusion as he tilts his head and suddenly the feed cuts off.
After a little while, text appears.]
It would have been nicer if this had waited a bit and I suppose asking for a warp back to Prontera is futile, yes?
Oh well. I will not deny help where help is needed so I will fight for you. That said, hello, I am Jacquese. If any party needs a monk, I will be glad to help. ☺
I only have one question, because I do wonder; if it is true people are brought here from different worlds, why not leave that way? It is more considerate than bringing people here.
That is all.
Third PERSON:
Jacquese had quite enjoyed the previous evening. Rather than stay at the Abbey for the night, him and his fellow monks had decided to spend it at the Prontera inn where their new party was staying. Get to know them and all that. The inn had been buzzing with the kind of subdued excitement that one would only get right before heading out on a great journey.
Considering it was Niflheim they were setting out for, there was a good dose of fear and nervousness as well. Everyone had their own reasons for coming and most of those reasons had been shared over dinner. Some were coming along in the hopes of making some money by bringing stuff back from Niflheim, others simply for the sake of adventure and a small portion of the party led by a Knight were going because a friend had gone missing there. If Jacquese hadn't already been convinced to go, the Knight's reason surely would have persuaded him right on the spot. The poor man.
To ease some of the worries, a Blacksmith had gone around showing people powerful weapons from the vast array she'd brought with her that she intended to lend to them once they had arrived. She'd handed Jacquese an Eden Mace II. Although Jacquese much preferred to fight with his fists, he knew how rare an Eden mace was and there was no way he could refuse. If the monsters were truly as strong as rumors indicated, he would most likely need it. He could still fight with a mace if need be, the days of swinging a mace around as an acolyte weren't something he'd forget any time soon.
The rest of the evening had been filled with many tales of adventures and stories of distant homes. It was always enjoyable to hear them and Jacquese couldn't imagine ever growing tired of hearing about other people's experiences. Perhaps it was because he couldn't easily share his own, he wasn't sure, but he gladly listened either way.
When morning came, he was one of the few who rose early. He went outside and, with the permission of the bubbly Blacksmith, took the Nemesis with him to give it a few good swings. Testing out the grip, the weight and feel of it as he swung it. It was a fine weapon and they seemed to be in good company as well. Jacquese felt confident they would be just fine, they could handle Niflheim whatever may come.
» ADDITIONAL NOTES
Just for clarification: Jacquese is physically mute, he was born that way and it's why he was abandoned, so it's not because of trauma or anything and it can't be cured.
